This article is born of a few questions we have recieved over the past few months. In our policies (see Safety, Inclusion & Access) . Our company celebrates and supports diversity in all its forms. Diversity and inclusion does not mean lower quality, it means celebrating the diversity that exists in our world.
The only ground rules are that people are willing to be a part of a top-quality performance, reliable and pleasant to work with. People of all demographics (ethnicity, accent, socio-eoconomic background, gender, disability etc) are welcomed and included both on stage and as crew; our only real rule is that due to the touring and late evenings, that all actors and crew are aged over 16 (to the sky's the limit). In the real world, you will see people of all kinds of different appearances, and backgrounds - in a stage show we like to reflect that as well, so a diverse cast and crew is creatively a perfect descision; nor should someone be excluded simply because they are "different". While we cannot accomodate absolutely everyone (eg. being asked if someone can be involved who cannot work with regular rehearsals or going to different performance spaces: or where someone is unable to behave appropriately towards other people), we always look to include rather than exclude. With disabilities or other accessibility needs, we do everything that we are able to ensure that people are able to participate safely, and we stand fully against any discrimination aimed against any of our team members. Inclusion is a simple process - being open to honest conversations about whatever question might be raised, looking at ways to solve any barriers (percieved or real) that may exist for the person in question, and being accepting of difference. If discrimination occurs towards a member of our team, then we will (and do) stand by them.
