As well as its summer tour of The Scarlet Pimpernel, featuring over 20 local actors and stage/costume crew, and 60 handmade 18th century period costumes made from recycled fabrics, the South Devon Players is having a very exciting anniversary year. The theatre company has signed an ongoing TV streaming deal with the channel Vomo, available globally on Roku and Amazon, and, as if that isnt enough, is also very excited at the prospect of its London debut in August, at a small but well known fringe theatre - the Etcetera Theatre. A key mission of the South Devon Players is highlighting the incredible talent and skills that appear in Devon based theatre, in exciting, engaging productions combining innovation with tradition, suitable for all ages and backgrounds. Aug 1st - The Etcetera Theatre, London BOOK YOUR TICKETS HERE This show contains 60 handmade costumes created from recycled fabrics and materials, to historical patterns, ranging from court fashions of the 18th century, to rough street clothes. The South Devon Players places a great deal of importance on keeping productions “green” and eco-friendly, both for the environment and also for budget. Travelling is done by car share and public transport with props and costumes carried in holdalls on laps. The fundraising for the minibus to get the team to London was facilitated by Brixham Pirate Festival, allowing us to have our space for fundraising on Middle Street. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a drama of disguise, adventure, and conspiracy set between London and Paris, during the height of the French Revolution in 1792. Combining drama and humour in equal measure, this is a production of pure escapism and suspense. In 1792, at the height of the French Revolution, in Paris, aristocrats destined for the Guillotine, begin to be rescued, by a mysterious figure, who always eludes capture. This rescuer can never be found or identified, except by little slips of paper featuring the image of a small English flower, the Scarlet Pimpernel. Meanwhile, in London, Sir Percy Blakeney; who is widely known to be the leader of London fashion, and a carefree, whimsical fop, marries Marguerite, a beautiful, intelligent French actress and friend of the revolutionary government in France, while Citizen Chauvelin, an agent of the French government, arrives in London, seeking the identity of the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernel.his is a drama based on the novel by Baroness Orczy and including wider historical and cultural research of the time. This setting is coupled with the South Devon Players core values of inclusion, leading to a show featuring a wonderful diverse cast and crew with a total age range spanning over 50 years on stage, with actors taking their first professional stage role, through to those who have been professionally performing across the UK for twenty or thirty years, all working alongside one another in a joyful creative environment, regardless of age, experience, neurodivergence, ethnicity or gender.

Many thanks to Groundwork as well. #brxhamtheatre #brixham #supporttheatre #fundraisng #theatre #britishtheatre   The Vigilance (https://www.vigilancewww.vigilanceofbrixham.co.ukofbrixham.co.uk)is a Brixham sialing Trawler built at Upham’s Yard in Brixham in 1926 - she was the last one ever built; and is typical of the towns traditional red sailed trawlers built in the 1800s, and early 20th Century. It is maintained by a wonderful team of local volunteers, and has just been undergoing a huge refit. We collaborated with the Vigilance, and with two amazing photographers, Tracey Hodges and Chris Vicenti from Paignton Photographic Club (http://www.ppcphotography.org.uk) These photographs will be used by the models, photographers and the Vigilance, for respective portfolios, and recreating local historical town heritage. Today several of our team had an absolutely wonderful afternoon working with the Vigilance of Brixham a stunning old fishing trawler that is currently being renovated, to recreate olden late 1800s/early 1900s photos on board, such as you would have seen from the time that the Vigilance was built. This shoot was one of our collaborations with Paignton Photographic Club with Tracey Hodges and Chris Vicenti. There are lots of photos to edit up, which will be used by our actors, the Vigilance, and the photographic club. Over the next week or two there will be lots of beautiful photos - but here is a quick look behind the scenes! And look at the wonderful feedback from the photographers! And - many thanks to The Prince William, Brixham for accomodating us all coming in for coffee afterwards! There are already discussions about the next themed photoshoots, to which local photographers will be invited, and our actors/ crew as models.  Stewart Mckenzie - Mr Hyde After literally decades of procrastination, and in the midst of what is clearly a midlife crisis, Stewart L Mackenzie has finally decided to have a bash at professional acting. Having been lucky enough to have performed extensively in the South Devon area over the years with various local theatrical societies, and also professionally as part of the inaugural Totnes Fringe Festival, Stewart is now taking on the role of 'Mr Hyde' in his first performance with The South Devon Players.  Joan Smith - Inspector Newcomen Acting since aged 8, Joan is a professional BAFTA winning actress and winner of a national social media award. Joan is a triple threat performer and her credits include TV commercials, tv pilots, touring theatre productions, immersive entertainment, comedy dining, musicals, pantomimes, theatre in education, as well as commercial and general modelling. Fun fact: Joan has completed the Royal Marines Commando Challenge

See REVIEWS for audience reviews of our previous shows ______ DEVON/ OPEN BOOK PROFITSHARE / THEATRE / ANY GENDER OR ETHNICITY/ - Roles open for actors aged 16 to the Skys the limit. - Most roles in our staging of this play are not bound by gender; we are looking for the strongest actor for each roles. - Any ethnicity/ accent/ experience level equally welcome. What we are looking for are great performance skills, pleasant friendly teamwork, and the desire to be an active part of a really excellent quality show. - The styling is steampunk/mild horror. The show is suitable for all audiences . - if you cannot make auditions August 17th please contact us to arrange an audition over the two weeks before. - Actors should be based in, or have a base in, Devon because of attending rehearsals and performances. Sorry none of us who are regulars with the theatre team are in a financial or housing position to be able to put people up from further afield. - Our show teams are diverse in terms of age, experience, ethnicity and we usually have several neurodivergent team members - everyone coming on board should be willing to work as a part of a diverse group of people. - the show is profitshare for funding reasons. We cover rehearsal space/ costumes/ insurance etc by selling second hand bits on eBay and handmade jewellery in a couple of local shops. This is on an open book process where ticket sales reports and any venue costs are shown upfront for perusal, and the ticket profits are shared equally between each person in the show team. Sadly we cannot guarantee how much this is as it can very widely as is dependant on ticket sales . We constantly do our best to apply for funding to bring everyone up to equity rates but this cant be guaranteed and we don’t believe in promising what we can’t deliver. - ALL cast and crew also are given access to portfolio photos and show video, copies of any press or promotional content featuring themselves, references on request (after completion of thier first show run with us), and anything else that we find we can offer. - and - in answer to a common question we get: nobody is ever charged anything to audition or perform with us.
