About the show
What do you do, when a global pandemic hits, and all your live shows have to be postponed for an unknown period of time?? (cancellation is not a word in our vocabluary, all the planned live shows will happen once it is safe and practicable to do so, when theatres are able to reopen) Many theatre companies have simply had to close, not knowing if or when they will be able to reopen. Most actors and theatre crew, overnight, lost their livlihoods. We had that choice as well, but in the grand tradition of the South Devon Players, finding ways to adapt and survive, we decided to find ways to move our performances online. To try to keep our actors earning at least something from online shows. To remain open - just in cyberspace, until we can reopen in a more traditional manner. .
It has been easier said than done of course. Many of our team had to learn the technology from scratch in a few weeks; using video conferencing, as well as lighting and using digital backdrops, all by using whatever technology we all have at home. As a company, we had to find new ways to stream our work online, learn new software to do that, how to integrate ticket sales for online events, how to work digitally in all aspects of production, assisting our team members who are less confident in digital technology, learning how to market the shows soley online, and then creating ways to replicate the theatre experience, as best we can, online.
Digital theatre cannot be the same as live theatre. And there is no rulebook written on this kind of situation - after all, no theatre company, at least since the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, has been in this situation, and in those days, the internet did not exist, so our approach is developed by what we hope is logical thinking, trying & testing technical approaches, and as this is the first of our online projects, we would love to hear any thoughts or questions you have as the audience. - email southdevonplayers@gmail.com
The Players are, as always committed to creating great entertainment, and keeping their actors and crew in work as much as is possible.
This production is only one of a summer schedule of digital performances including other full length Shakespeare, newly written childrens adventure stories, and more.
