CONTENT NOTES
  • Swearing - One use of the word "bastard".
  • Nudity/ sexual content - None enacted. One verbal reference to rape.
  • Violence - Moderate to strong: fights, gladiators,  manhandling, threat & aggression, Crucifixion. There is use of stage blood.
  • Loud sounds - Yes. Fighting sounds, shouts, trumpets/alarms, drumming, thunder,
  • Other content advisories -  The play does contain scenes involving slavery;  some of the negative "baddie" characters do express anti-Semitic opinions against other characters.
  • Strobe / flashing lights - No, but thunderstorm effects used in the Crucifixion
  • “If this show were a film what rating would it be?” - PG-12
  • Is there an interval?  -Yes
  • Running time? -  3 hours including interval
  • Is there a social/ political/ religious bias to the show? The story is based on a novel set within a beautifully researched depiction of the ancient Roman empire, in Biblical times, and features Jesus as a reoccurring character and pivotal influence on the story. As a result, Ben Hur is widely considered to be a Christian story.  The play however is designed that anyone may enjoy it, as an adventure drama, regardless of faith.
  • Do actors enter the audience area at any time?  - Yes. You will see actors enter or exit using the aisles in the auditorium, namely the actors playing gladiators, and during the Crucifixion.
  • Is audience participation encouraged or not?  In some places in the show,  yes. For example, where we stage the Roman "games", participation and cheering (or booing) for characters is very much appreciated. It is never mandatory, but it is also fine to do so. It will be clear in the programme, where these points are.
  • Is this show suitable for autistic audience members?  Autistic people's specific conditions come with a variety of points that vary per person. This show is created and directed by an autistic person, and there are several people with this condition involved in the production. We would recommend that you get in touch with us a few days before attending to ask about any specific questions. In the past we have advised in detail what to expect in terms of loud sounds, lighting effects, startling actions, and generally what to expect when visiting the show in terms of both the performance and the venue. If you would like to discuss any questions, please EMAIL us.
