Synopsis, ebook, and historical research
(the play is based directly on the book. Read the synopsis if you want to know the story without tackling the full size book. Having said that, speaking from having performed in Les Miserables a few years ago with another group, I would recommend immersing yourself in as much Les Mis and linked history as possible as you will be portraying complex characters who are shaped by the society and events in which they live.)
