A note from the director/ Madame Rochard
Thank you so much for joining us for this thrilling adventure set in England just befor the outbreak of World War 1. It has been a total pleasure working with such a wonderful cast and crew on this beautiful script by Germaine Shames, and when we are eventually able to get back to live shows, we hope very much to take this show on tour, with as many of the original cast and crew as are available. Creating theatre during the Covid pandemic is a huge challenge; everyone working from home safely, with greenscreens and webcams facilitating these performances. Keeping some measure of work for our actors and crew coming in, and keeping our love of performing alive, is imperative in these times. Every penny from the ticket sales is shared equally among cast and crew. Ultimately we would like to be able to fund our shows with full union-rate wages for our amazing people, but until that time comes, equal profit-share is all that we can manage. Taking Madame Rochard on was a re-cast; my big skills gap as an actor is in foreign accents, however I hope what I lack in accent, comes over in the self-assured larger than life personality of this wonderful theatrical character. Madame Rochard's typically period blase' attitude to the "cultural appropriation" and falsification of Native American life for her performance, is something rather shocking to us nowadays - and even (rightly!) challenged by other early 20th Century characters in the drama, was actually quite difficult to perform. However, as a performer I do find challenges within characters fascinating to explore, whether I agree with the character's view or not. For me, it has kindled an interest in the works of DH Lawrence and it has been a delight to find such a talented writer as Germaine Shames, whom I hope we will work with many times in the future.
