The South Devon Players Supporters Trust (founded August 2019) exists to support the South Devon Players in the provision of otherwise non-existent local opportunities for actors to create professional work in the field, developing skills, and furthering professional development for local people, regardless of their background. The skills gained are highly transferable ones that can also be used in a wide range of employment, eg literacy, technical skills, self presentation, communication, public speaking, leadership, and more.
We have a public facebook group for anyone interested in supporting the team: https://www.facebook.com/groups/934660796889851/ Torbay, where the Players are based, ranks as having a high level of poverty, with 37% of households in, or at high risk of, poverty (Guardian 2012), one of the highest in the United Kingdom; an issue which often leads to low aspirations, and lack of opportunity & employment. The South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company was formed by an original four local people, in the winter of 2005 - 2006, who, finding a lack of professional performance opportunities available in the Torbay area, decided to make their own, and welcome others to join the team, to provide them with the same opportunities. Over the years, spearheaded by Laura Jury, the South Devon Players have gone from strength to strength, winning local, national and international awards, performing world-class theatre and film projects, while remaining true to its original aim of providing top quality opportunities to local people regardless of age, gender, sexuality, socio-economic background, or racial heritage, and bringing world-class theatre to local audience at an affordable price, in accessible venues. The work of the South Devon Players Supporters Trust is to ensure the survival of the Players, though assistance with critical funding for things like rehearsal space at a local community centre, costumes and props for shows, technical equipment (light & sound), and the hire of performance venues. In future we hope to also be able to facilitate the provision of emergency travel funds for those on low incomes to participate in our work by funding bus travel for those who cannot afford it, and providing subsidised formal arts training courses for local people Joining us helps make this all a reality. Your contributions make a huge difference. None of the members of the South Devon Players Supporters Trust are paid, and every penny raised is used directly to its best effect to ensure that the hard work of the Players can continue, and grow. |

About the Supporters:
We were set up in 2019, to assist the Players with thier growth and development. Prevously, it has been extremely challenging for the handful running the team to not only plan and stage productions, but also , in so doing, publicicity, company management, fundraising, training, tech, direction, research, costuming, and the myriad of tasks that are needed to make a production happen. Fundraising traditionally has taken place with tables at jumble sales where possible, selling donated items saved by friends or in job lots from Freecycle. This of course has been something which had held back the development of what SDP could achieve, and which the friends will now assist with. With more people able to assist with fundraising and support roles, the Players are able to continue their work more effectively. |
