Coming up on our 20th anniversary year, we have an amazing team, but are a bit short handed for some things behind the scenes, so we are putting this call out.
We are a well established, lively and friendly theatre company based in Brixham, bringing classical literature to life in lively and often groundbreaking shows, to local venues ranging from theatres to village halls, across south Devon, and each summer up to the Midlands. We are looking for lovely people who would like to be involved as - stage crew - front of house welcomers/ ushers - publicity assistants - fundraising stall helpers - grant bid writers The only criteria are that you have a passion for high quality regional theatre, are aged 16+ (to the skys the limit), are reliable and trustworthy, and willing to help maintain a pleasant friendly atmosphere. For things like publicity and grants, we do need good literacy as well. Time and location committment vary by the role, we try to keep things as flexible as possible without jepoardising the theatre productions, the most important thing is that everyone does the things they have agreed to do, because in a team, each person relies on everyone else to do thus. What do you get out of it? you make likeminded friends who are passionate about the arts and literature, you can build up a portfolio, references and new skills (we can also run things as college/ university work experience), you can network with a wide range of our contacts in the creative industries, join in theme photoshoots and side projects, and contribute to an important part of the local cultural landscape. And have fun! If you would like to find out more, please drop us a DM on this page or an email to [email protected] to arrange for a friendly chat about it over coffee, or a visit to see one of our rehearsals or building sessions.

The Vigilance (https://www.vigilancewww.vigilanceofbrixham.co.ukofbrixham.co.uk)is a Brixham sialing Trawler built at Upham’s Yard in Brixham in 1926 - she was the last one ever built; and is typical of the towns traditional red sailed trawlers built in the 1800s, and early 20th Century. It is maintained by a wonderful team of local volunteers, and has just been undergoing a huge refit. We collaborated with the Vigilance, and with two amazing photographers, Tracey Hodges and Chris Vicenti from Paignton Photographic Club (http://www.ppcphotography.org.uk) These photographs will be used by the models, photographers and the Vigilance, for respective portfolios, and recreating local historical town heritage. A HUGE THANK YOU TO The Brixham Pirate Festival for our stall and to all the lovely people who came along and joined in the wet sponge fun, jewellery, games etc. this allowed us to raise everything we need to get the team to perform at The Birmingham Black Box Theatre & Events with our coming tour of Romeo & Juliet with minibus and driver, fuel etc, and realated supplies for our projects. Also a massive thank you to Crafty Cwtch cafe over the road from us, for keeping us going with coffee and snacks! You have made this all possible! As a Brixham-based theatre team founded 20 years ago to help local people launch or further careers in the creative industries , bringing classical literature both to theatres, non-traditional spaces and schools; and audiences who don’t always get to experience live theatre; and so far not lucky in securing grant or sponsorship funding to achieve this; fundraising like this, is critical to our survival. More info on our up and coming public shows at https://www.southdevonplayers.com/box-office.html We now have tickets on sale for all public performances of Romeo & Juliet - you can book at our Box Office page.
The public venue tour consists of BBRIXHAM: June 14th (matinee & evening) TORQUAY: June 28th (evening) KINGSKERSWELL/ NEWTON ABBOT: July 5th (evening) STOKENHAM/ KINGSBRIDGE: July 12th (evening) BUDLEIGH SALTERTON: July 19th (evening) TOPSHAM/ EXETER: July 26th (evening) BIRMINGHAM: August 2nd (evening) PLYMOUTH: August 9th (evening) We have had an absolutely incredible day today at Brixham Theatre bringing a full uncut performance to TSAT - Brixham College students, of our production of Macbeth, this concluding our show tour since November;
Hearing from one of the teachers that this is the first ever experience of live theatre for many of the students, and then seeing (and hearing from the school staff) that the students really engaged with and enjoyed the show was one of the best things in the world. Also, a huge thank you to the Brixham Theatre staff for making it run smoothly and welcoming the students and teachers- and also to the students for being so lovely! It’s been a huge success for everyone and an absolute joy for our team <3 Last Friday we were one of three Torbay organisations pitching at Local Spark: Torbay Community Supported Enterprise’s Dragons Den event - with Lisa Highton, Laura Jury and Rich Sandford, for help with new portable lights , marketing & outreach with our shows and education work, networking, touring transport etc. Many many thanks to all those who offered consultancy, introductions to places & people who may be able to help us grow, and all sorts of useful help. They will all get followed up with alacrity over the next two or three weeks. Also a huge thank you to Helen Ambler, Community Builder for Brixham for the photo of Laura pitching - and to everyone there for making it a truly excellent, positive, supportive space. Thank you again to everyone A big challenge which we have had since the day we started is support accessing writing grant applications and networking etc. With being one person doing all that, and the theatre company admin, while also being autistic and of a minority, Laura has found it largely inaccessible both in terms of time and in terms of people/ organizations/ funders making negative judgements on “someone different from them”, and her own social anxiety and c-ptsd. This has of course had a huge knock on to what we have been able to achieve for the amazing local people we work with. Appeals for reliable help on this, for 17 years, fell on deaf ears. Now the lovely Sue Slade from Paignton, also mother to two autistic teenagers who often become involved in our shows, has come on board as Laura’s access support for applying to grants, networking and building up those things, and being that contact whom outside bodies for funding, networking and the arts, may feel more comfortable accepting.. Already on Day 1; two applications have gone off with another two in the drafting stage. A huge thank you to a bunch of our lovely actors who braved the heavy rain to join in with Brixham Future's Coronation parade to promote our performances of Les Miserables - and got lots of interested responses! And then a huge thank you to the Crafty Cwtch cafe for being a great base for drying off and getting a hot cuppa. #theatre #acting #actorslife #brixhamtheatre #britishtheatre #actors #lesmiserables #lesmis #devontheatre #DevonActors #torbay #Coronation2023 A huge thank you to our long time friends and supporters The Naked Sheep Hayle. This amazing family owned company in Cornwall makes handmade clothing and homewares from natural wools, sold all over the country. They are now supplying beautiful handmade tea cosies for sale at our friends cafe (Crafty Cwtch, 66 Middle Street, Brixham. , to raise funds for us here at The South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company, Brixham. Thank you sooo much Allie and Janet
At the South Devon Players Theatre & Film Company, we are now seeking to connect with schools (or other places of education) who would like to work with us - we would love to work with educational establishments (in discussion with what they need) to provide workshops, talks, Q&As, excerpt performances (etc - we are open to discussion with this) , this could be related to the literature/ story, the history or the process of creating the show. We also have some neurodiverse people within the cast, so discussions on making theatre participation accessible to people with those conditions is also very welcome.
These can be in person, at your school/ college, or we can host it in Brixham - alternatively we can also work with you over video link (Zoom etc) We are also happy to discuss arranging full show performances, at cost, if these are relevant. The shows are all "suitable-for-all") March - June this would be linked to our show Les Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean - this is a non-musical theatre drama based off the book, which is going on public tour to Brixham, Plymouth, Torquay and Exeter. Unavailable days would be the weekly rehearsal days; Wednesdays and Sundays (as well as the show dates) August (so probably logistically September for schools) to January 2024 we will be producing William Shakespeare's Macbeth; this is the full uncut text, again touring publicly to Brixham, Plymouth, Torquay and Exeter, the staging is a post-apocalyptic setting (the aftermath of a nuclear war) , When we did this show (same approach and styling) in 2019k, we won a theatre award for it in New York after streaming it worldwide, and ran an extra weekday performance at Brixham Theatre for a couple of primary schools. We would absolutely love to hear from anyone interested in discussing further. Please (in the first instance) get in touch via email; [email protected]) |
